Lasse Schone's late goal sees Ajax earn a 2-2 draw against Celtic in Amsterdam

A late goal from substitute Lasse Schone gave Ajax a 2-2 draw against Celtic at the Amsterdam ArenA where Hoops left-back Emilio Izaguirre was sent off.

A late goal from substitute Lasse Schone gave Ajax a 2-2 draw against Celtic at the Amsterdam ArenA where Hoops left-back Emilio Izaguirre was sent off.
In an absorbing encounter, right-back Mikael Lustig headed the Parkhead men into an interval lead in the 42nd minute after Danish midfielder Viktor Fischer had cancelled out midfielder Nir Bitton's eighth minute opener.
Celtic looked assured after the break but when Izaguirre was dismissed in the 74th minute by referee Luca Banti for picking up his second yellow of the night with a foul on Anwar El Ghazi, the home side came storming back with Schone scoring a free-kick in the 84th minute and Ronny Deila's side hanging on for a point.
Deila, under pressure after losing the top spot at the top of the Ladbrokes Premiership with a defeat at Aberdeen at the weekend, and having exited the Champions League at the play-off stage, suffered a blow with the loss of Charlie Mulgrew to a thigh injury - Stuart Armstrong and Scott Allan were also out injured.
That meant a debut for Croatia Under-21 stopper Jozo Simunovic, signed recently from Dinamo Zagreb.
Izaguirre returned with midfielders James Forrest and Kris Commons coming into the starting line-up.
Ajax, top of the Eredivisie and unbeaten in five league games, had 22-year-old German forward Amin Younes making his first competitive start, joined in attack by captain Davy Klaassen and El Ghazi.
Celtic got off to a confidence-boosting start when Commons set up Bitton who had time and space to drill a right-footed shot from 16 yards low past Jasper Cillessen, giving the Ajax keeper no chance.
The Dutch side tried to quickly get back into the match, somewhat unconvincingly, but in the 25th minute they levelled with a well-worked goal.
The talented Younes went past Lustig with ease before slipping the ball to Klaassen, whose clever flick to Fischer was fired past the diving Hoops keeper Craig Gordon from the edge of the box.
The goal appeared to strip Deila's side of some confidence as Ajax, by contrast, started to move the ball around with more belief.
However, in the 39th minute Celtic could have got themselves back in front from a quick throw-in when Forrest raced along the bye-line before picking out Leigh Griffiths a few yards from goal.
The Hoops striker failed to connect properly with his shot although Cillessen still did well to push the ball past the post for a corner, which came to nothing.
But it was from a corner three minutes later that Lustig rose highest to head in Commons' deep cross, giving the Parkhead side the half-time advantage.
Celtic looked the more likely to get the next goal in the second-half, but the game changed when Izaguirre got his marching orders.
The Honduras international, booked just after the break for a challenge on Kenny Tete, was allowed a couple more fouls before referee Banti deemed his trip on El Ghazi to be one too many, leaving Celtic to replace Forrest with defender Tyler Blackett and fight with 10 men.
Ajax substitute Arkadiusz Milik, on for Younes, hit the post with a header in the 79th minute, after Klaassen had gone close, also with a header.
But Celtic were undone when Schone, on for Fischer in the 75th minute, fired in a free-kick from wide on the left which beat everyone including Gordon and ended up in the net.
Milik headed just over as Ajax threw everything forward looking for the winner but the Hoops held out four minutes off added time although they will look at Izaguirre's dismissal as the cause of a nervy ending.
Celtic manager Deila told BT Sport 2: "It's always tough away in Europe, especially here in Amsterdam.
"We showed very good work and attitude, we were very organised and I think we were unlucky to get the red card.
"Emilio played well to negate the situation. In the first half he didn't do anything wrong but in the second half (El Ghazi) gets more inside and we get into trouble.
"It was tough in the beginning (with 10 men), they got more crosses in, but when we got five behind we were very secure and didn't concede many chances."
Deila was satisfied with a point, though, and added: "I'm very proud, we have had a tough period, we have many games left but this is a good start.
"Confidence will come and we will get better and better."

VIEW FROM THE BENCH
Parkhead boss Ronny Deila believes Celtic would have won had Emilio Izaguirre not been sent off while Frank de Boer will have been glad with a point after trailing 2-1 in the second half and not really looking like drawing level until the dismissal.
MOAN OF THE MATCH
Izaguirre's sending off could easily have been avoided. He was let off with a couple of fouls before the referee could take no more. Should have been more disciplined.

Ronny Deila rues red card to Emilio Izaguirre as Celtic draw with Ajax

Ronny Deila claims Celtic would have beaten Ajax in their Europa League Group A opener in Amsterdam had Emilio Izaguirre not been sent off - but was reluctant to criticise his full-back.

Ronny Deila claims Celtic would have beaten Ajax in their Europa League Group A opener in Amsterdam had Emilio Izaguirre not been sent off - but was reluctant to criticise his full-back.
The Parkhead side looked in control of the match, leading 2-1 after right-back Mikael Lustig headed them into an interval lead in the 42nd minute. Ajax midfielder Viktor Fischer had previously cancelled out Nir Bitton's eighth-minute opener.
However, when Izaguirre was dismissed in the 73rd minute by referee Luca Banti for picking up his second yellow of the night with a foul on Anwar El Ghazi, the home side came storming back against the 10-man Hoops.
Substitute Lasse Schone made it 2-2 with a free-kick in the 84th minute, with the Scottish champions hanging on through four added minutes for a point.
Asked if he thought Celtic would have won with 11 men, the Norwegian said: "Yes, I am sure we would have done that because they didn’t create anything. We were very comfortable and sat in and we could have made changes in the end to be even better in defence.
"When we had 11 against 11 we had very good control of the game.
"There are so many things in the game and that happens with everybody. Emilio has no record of having a lot of red cards.
"I personally think he played very well up until he got the red card. He took out maybe their best player the whole game.
"We created chances and defended as a team and I am very proud of the boys.
"But when we got down to 10 men we had more difficulties, more crosses into our box but over the whole game a draw is okay and it is a very important point, it is always difficult to get points away."
Asked if he was tempted to substitute Izaguirre before what looked like an inevitable red card was shown, Deila, under some pressure after losing the top spot in the Ladbrokes Premiership to Aberdeen with a 2-1 defeat by the Dons at Pittodrie on Saturday, said: "It was a very difficult decision to think if I had to take him off.
"I think he had very good control of El Ghazi in the first half. He didn't do anything.
"Also we had players with cramps and we had players who had not played so much and needed to change.
"I couldn't understand why he got the first yellow card but that happened and we can't do anything about it.
"For me, it's attitude, discipline, organisation and the boys showed me that they really wanted to fight.
"We got one point away in Amsterdam and that could be important at the end of the group.
"Everyone knows we are a good team and can play good football but today we needed performance and some confidence and if you can back that up with points it makes it easy.
"We got a point, it could have been three but we had a good performance and that gives us a lot of energy and confidence."
"We really want to beat Ajax at Celtic Park but everything is about performances and players, and they showed great attitude.
"The players showed that they can bounce back. We got a point and now it is to get ready for Sunday and start winning games in the league as well."

Celtic and Ajax aiming to start Europa League on winning note

Ronny Deila played down talk of a crisis ahead of Celtic's Europa League Group A opener against Ajax in Amsterdam on Thursday.

Ronny Deila played down talk of a crisis ahead of Celtic's Europa League Group A opener against Ajax in Amsterdam on Thursday.
Both clubs, previous winners of the competition, missed out on this season's Champions League group stages after losing their respective play-off ties.
Celtic dropped into the Europa League after a 4-3 aggregate defeat by Swedish side Malmo and there is pressure on the Hoops' Norwegian boss Deila to make a better fist of the second-tier competition.
"We are determined to reach our goals, to win trophies and progress in Europe, Deila said.
"Everybody was disappointed not to get into the Champions League and it can take a bit of time to get over it.
"But I think we have cleared the air now and can focus on getting forward. We still have so much to look forward to."
Also in Group A, Fenerbahce take on Norwegian opponents Molde for the first time when they square off in Istanbul.
Bordeaux have won only one of 10 games against English sides in their history and will be hoping for a positive start when they host Liverpool in Group B. Swiss outfit Sion are also in that pool and will be at home to Rubin Kazan.
Borussia Dortmund, back in the group stages after a four-year absence, will be in Germany to face Russian side Krasnodar in Group C. Azerbaijan side Qabala have made it all the way from the first qualifying round to the group stages and will take on PAOK in the other Group C clash.
In Group D, competition debutants Midtjylland open their campaign against Legia Warsaw in Denmark and Napoli have home clash with Club Brugge. The Serie A club are searching for their first win of the season.
Marseille visit Dutch side FC Groningen in their opening Group F fixture and Slovan Liberec go up against Portuguese club Braga, who will be playing their 100th UEFA game.
Viktoria Plzen coach Karel Krejci took over from Pavel Vrba in the summer and is looking to make a positive Group E start against Dinamo Minsk. In the other group game, Rapid Vienna are hoping to clinch their first ever win against Spanish opposition when they host Villarreal.
Rosenborg are unbeaten in their last nine European away games and take on St Etienne in France in Group G. Last season's runners-up Dnipro welcome Italian side Lazio to Ukraine in the other Group G match.
Sporting Lisbon open their Group H campaign at home to Lokomotiv Moscow. No Albanian side have managed to avoid defeat against Turkish opposition, and that is what Skenderbeu are aiming to do in the other Group H match with Besiktas in Elbasan.
Lech Poznan have lost only one of their last 15 European home games and are at home to Portuguese side Belenenses in Group I. New Fiorentina coach Paulo Sousa will have to put emotions to one side when he takes on Basle - the team he led to the Swiss title last season - in the other group encounter.
Anderlecht have won only one of their last eight European home games and lock horns with Monaco in Brussels in Group J. Tottenham are at home to Qarabag in a Group J opener that will see an English side take on an Azerbaijani outfit for the first time in UEFA competition.
Schalke travel to Nicosia to face Apoel in Group K, which also sees Sparta Prague visit Greece to take on Asteras.

The 2012 tournament runners-up Athletic Bilbao are in Group L and host an Augsburg side making their debut in European competition. In the same pool, Serbian champions Partizan Belgrade, who have won all three of their European home games, host AZ Alkmaar for the first time.

Celtic hit by Charlie Mulgrew injury blow ahead of Ajax trip

Charlie Mulgrew will miss Celtic's Europe League group opener with Ajax on Thursday night because of a thigh injury, Hoops assistant manager John Collins has announced.

Charlie Mulgrew will miss Celtic's Europe League group opener with Ajax on Thursday night because of a thigh injury, Hoops assistant manager John Collins has announced.
The Parkhead defender suffered the injury in Saturday's 2-1 Ladbrokes Premiership defeat by Aberdeen at Pittodrie.
Speaking at Glasgow airport before the Celtic squad flew out to Amsterdam, former Parkhead midfielder Collins said: "Charlie is the only one not here. He has a thigh muscle injury, so we're still waiting on confirmation of the scan result but it looks like it will be a few weeks.
"It is a blow, he's an experienced player. He's played in a lot of big games so we just hope he has a speedy recovery."
Collins admitted Mulgrew's absence means there is a good chance Croatia Under-21 defender Jozo Simunovic, signed from Dinamo Zagreb for a fee reported to be as much as £5.5million, will make his debut in the Amsterdam ArenA.
He said: "The team has not been picked but Jozo trained very well and there's every chance he could get his debut.
"It's the start of a group and it's going to be a tough challenge.
"Ajax are a good young team. I watched their Champions League qualifiers and they were very unlucky not to qualify.
"They are a great club with a great history, so it's going to be a wonderful challenge for us.
"We are looking for a reaction (from the Aberdeen game), a good performance, but we are going into a different environment and it's going to be a great challenge for the players, a new challenge.
"We don't play teams like Ajax every week, they have a lot of new players, doing very well and only lost their first points at the weekend in a 2-2 draw.
"It is another game, another tournament, and I thought we did fairly well in it last season getting out the group stages, so we want to do exactly the same this season.
"We won't be favourites, it will be a tough match but one we feel we can go and win.
"I'm very excited. You have to look forward to these big games. We'll get there tonight and train in the stadium and it will feel like a Champions League game."
Asked if there was anything out of the ordinary about manager Ronny Deila meeting with chief executive Peter Lawwell on Sunday, after being toppled off the top of the table by the Dons, Collins said: "Nothing whatsoever. The manager meets the chief executive every week.
"I wasn't in the discussion but the talk was about football. That's what it is always about, that's why they talk."
