Manuel Pellegrini backs Manchester City fans over booing of UEFA anthem

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has backed the club's supporters over their continued booing of the Champions League anthem.

City are the subject of UEFA disciplinary proceedings after fans continued to voice their disapproval of the European governing body prior to Wednesday's Champions League match against Sevilla.

Fans regularly started jeering during the competition's familiar pre-match anthem last year in protest at the financial fair play sanctions imposed on the club.

Ill feeling towards UEFA then grew after their match at CSKA Moscow last October was ordered to be played behind closed doors because of the poor behaviour of Russian supporters. Many City fans had already arranged travel and accommodation.

But "disruption of national or competition anthems" is deemed "inappropriate behaviour" a club can be liable for under article 16 of UEFA's disciplinary regulations.

UEFA's match delegate on Wednesday included mention of the latest incidence of widespread booing in his report and the governing body is now compelled to consider the matter. It will be dealt with by UEFA's disciplinary committee on November 19 and the club could face a charge.

Pellegrini thinks fans have a right to protest peacefully, much as they can boo people involved in a game.

Speaking at a press conference to preview Sunday's derby at Manchester United, the Chilean said: "I think that everyone has the right to express what they feel, with order, with respect.

"I don't know why UEFA thinks this about our fans, but I think it's exactly the same for the manager, or the players or the referee, they pay for their ticket and with respect they can express what they feel."

Pellegrini also suggested he did not disagree with the reasons for the supporters' protests.

He said: "I always say to my players the fans boo for a reason. Maybe in some moments fans can make mistakes and boo a player or manager for one action, but it's difficult to think all the fans are making mistakes."

Manchester City reported to UEFA over booing of Champions League anthem

Manchester City have been reported to UEFA over their fans' continued booing of the Champions League anthem, Press Association Sport understands.

Disciplinary proceedings will now be opened by the European governing body and a charge could follow if it is deemed the club have a case to answer.

It is understood the matter was reported by a match delegate after the anthem was jeered by home fans prior to City's Champions League victory over Sevilla at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday.

UEFA is now obliged to consider the matter but this is standard procedure and it does not necessarily mean the club will be hit by sanctions. City have not commented following the development.

City fans have regularly booed the Champions League anthem over the past year in protest at the financial fair play punishment meted out to the club by UEFA in 2014.

City were fined £49million, hit with a transfer spending cap of the same amount and forced to limit their Champions League squad last season to 21 players rather than the regular 25.

Their disgruntlement with UEFA grew when a match against CSKA Moscow in the Russian capital last October was ordered to be played behind closed doors because of the behaviour of home fans. A number of City fans had already paid for tickets, travel and accommodation and felt they were being unfairly punished.

An organised boycott of the anthem was arranged in conjunction with Bayern Munich fans, who had a similar issue over a game in Moscow, prior to a game against the Germans last December. Both sets of supporters turned their backs during the anthem.

City manager Manuel Pellegrini this week refused to criticise supporters over the matter.

The Chilean was asked before the Sevilla game if the continued booing might be affecting his players in creating a negative atmosphere before games.

Pellegrini said: "I think we always have in the Etihad the atmosphere we need in Champions League, Capital One Cup or Premier League. We always feel the fans are behind the team and they always support us a lot.

"I don't think the atmosphere is lower than what we need. It is a good atmosphere."

UEFA later confirmed the report had been received and a date set for the matter to be considered.

A spokesperson said: "UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings for the disruption of the competition anthem at last night's match. The disciplinary body will deal with this case on November 19."

City could be charged under article 16 of UEFA's disciplinary regulations which does list "the disruption of national or competition anthems" as "inappropriate behaviour" the club could be liable for.

City are thought to be bemused by the development and would consider making representations to defend the rights of supporters to freedom of expression and peaceful protest if necessary.

Kevin de Bruyne hails Manchester City's win over Sevilla despite poor display

Match-winner Kevin de Bruyne claimed victory was all that mattered after his last-gasp goal secured another three points for Manchester City in the Champions League.

De Bruyne struck in injury time as City snatched a 2-1 victory over Sevilla despite an unconvincing display in their latest Group D outing at the Etihad Stadium.

The result lifted City to second in the table, just a point behind leaders Juventus, halfway through the group campaign. City's performances in Europe continue to underwhelm but making progress is all that matters to the side at this stage.

De Bruyne said: "It feels good. The most important thing was to win and that is what we did even if we didn't play our best game. In the end nobody says something if you go through in the group."

De Bruyne's late winner maintained his superb form, being his fifth goal in nine appearances since his £54million move to City from Wolfsburg in August.

Asked if he could have wished for such a fine start, the 24-year-old said: "Probably not. It feels good. Obviously I know I didn't play my best game game here but I am very happy to give the team the three points and it was very important for us."

The Belgian will now hope the momentum continues as the Barlcays Premier League leaders travel to Old Trafford for Sunday's derby against Manchester United.

He said: "I am very excited. These are the moments you live for as a player. There will be a lot of atmosphere. Great games and derbies are the most important games for the fans. Hopefully we can do good on Sunday."

De Bruyne's late heroics kept City on course for the last 16, although for much of the night it seemed they were second best.

Sevilla dominated possession and were both slick and incisive. They opened up City on the right to take a deserved lead on the half-hour through the outstanding Yevhen Konoplyanka, who had earlier hit the woodwork.

City equalised six minutes later when Wilfried Bony's shot took a big deflection off Adil Rami to beat Sergio Rico but the hosts still struggled to gain control.

Sevilla created numerous chances but proved wasteful in front of goal and City, who had been limited to counter-attacks, finished strongly.

Yaya Toure tested Rico in the last minute before releasing De Bruyne on the run that led to him burying a low shot in the bottom corner.

Defender Pablo Zabaleta said: "This was a massive step forward in terms of thinking about the next round and now we have a huge game on Sunday.

"Winning in that way at the end was a massive lift for the team and the fans. It was a fantastic finish from Kevin de Bruyne and a big three points.

"He is doing really well. His performance week-in, week-out is brilliant. He is a player who has really improved the team, a fantastic signing."

Dynamo Kiev charged with racist behaviour in Champions League tie with Chelsea

UEFA has launched disciplinary proceedings against Dynamo Kiev following disturbances at the Champions League match against Chelsea on Tuesday.

The Ukrainian side have been charged with racist behaviour and crowd disturbances following an incident captured on camera by anti-discrimination network Football Against Racism in Europe at the Group G match, which finished goalless.

Footage of the incident apparently shows a group of Dynamo fans attacking four black men after spotting them in a neighbouring section of the NSK Olimpiysky.

FARE's executive director, Piara Powar, confirmed to Press Association Sport: "Usually we do not go public with these sort of reports - but we thought the footage was so serious that it should be shared with the media."

UEFA's Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body will deal with the case on Tuesday, October 27.

Earlier this year, Dynamo were fined 15,000 euros by European football's governing body following the racist behaviour of their fans during a Europa League match against Everton at the same venue.

The Ukrainian side were also punished for setting off fireworks and for insufficient organisation during the 5-2 second leg win over the Toffees in March.

UEFA also ordered partial closure of their home ground for the first leg of the quarter-final against Fiorentina the following month.

Rafael Benitez hails 'exceptional' Real Madrid defence after stalemate in Paris

Real Madrid coach Rafael Benitez was proud of his players after his side earned a point at Paris St Germain on Wednesday.

The Spaniards drew 0-0 at the Parc des Princes in a Champions League Group A showdown to remain unbeaten this season and keep another clean sheet in the competition.

The outcome in France has kept Los Blancos second in the standings, level on seven points with PSG at the halfway stage.

"Real Madrid's defence was exceptional," Benitez said as reported in Marca. "Those who have played deserve all the praise.

"Despite the injuries, we have seen a good Real Madrid."

Real went into the contest having to do without injured Mateo Kovacic, Pepe, Dani Carvajal, James Rodriguez, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema.

PSG may have dominated possession but Real had more opportunities to score a winner.

"I'm not worried about not holding possession, what worries me is the image that we give," Benitez said."I was convinced that the team was going to give their all.

"We've had more chances than PSG despite having to do without a number of injured players."

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos, who returned to action against PSG after recovering from a shoulder problem, was also pleased with the outcome in Paris.

"I'm delighted with the result," Ramos said. "We cannot forget how many players we were without because of injury.

"But we played a serious game and were solid at the back.

"The only thing that was missing was the goal."

PSG, who like Real are unbeaten this season, had gone into the contest eager to show off their Champions League credentials and coach Laurent Blanc was disappointed to come away with a point.

"I'm not satisfied because we didn't get the result we had hoped for," he said to L'Equipe. "The first half has been more disappointing than the second.

"We showed an improvement after the restart but we gave the ball away too easily and we didn't make Real run.

"We made mistakes and bad choices in attack."

PSG have high hopes of going all the way in the Champions League this season to capture the European title for the first time.

Les Parisiens were knocked out in the quarter-finals for the third straight time last season.

"We need to show that ambition on the pitch," Blanc said. "We said we had to beat Real to send a message in Europe but it takes time to reach that level.

"We were able to compete against them and we will try to beat them in Spain."

The two sides meet again at the Bernabeu on November 3.

Manuel Pellegrini: Manchester City have proved the doubters wrong in Europe

Manuel Pellegrini declared Manchester City were answering their critics after they secured a second successive last-gasp Champions League win by beating Sevilla 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium.

Three weeks on from coming from behind in Germany to defeat Borussia Monchengladbach 2-1 with a late goal, City repeated the trick against their Spanish visitors as Kevin De Bruyne’s stoppage-time strike sealed all three points.

And Blues boss Pellegrini said afterwards: “I think that maybe there is a lot of criticism of this team in Europe but these two last games that we played in Europe reflect that we have the character to try to win.

“We will continue trying to improve our play, but for me, the character, concentration and intensity in Europe has been very important.

“When you win in the last minute it gives you more trust in what you are doing.

City had to dig deep to battle to a victory that leaves them with six points from three games in Group D, one point behind leaders Juventus, who were held to a goalless draw at home by Monchengladbach on Wednesday.

Sevilla took a deserved lead on the half-hour through their star man Yevhen Konoplyanka and although an Adil Rami own-goal saw City equalise six minutes later, it took a long time for the hosts to really get going.

They looked vulnerable at the back for long periods, while skipper and centre-back Vincent Kompany spent most of the game watching, only coming on as a substitute in the last few seconds.

Pellegrini had left Kompany on the bench during Saturday’s 5-1 win over Bournemouth after expressing his unhappiness about the defender having played for Belgium in the international break due to concerns over his fitness.

And asked about Kompany after the Sevilla game, Pellegrini said: “I think (City’s starting centre-back pairing) Nicolas Otamendi and Eliaquim Mangala are playing very well, both of them.

“Vincent is just coming back from a long injury that kept him out for a month, and it was probably a risk to give him the responsibility to play in this important game.”

Asked if he would be sticking with the Otamendi-Mangala partnership for Sunday’s derby match at Manchester United, Pellegrini added: “Tomorrow we will start thinking about the derby and we will see the way the players recover.

“We have a lot of different things to think about for the next game. I am happy with the team.”

When City did start to get a grip in the second half against Sevilla – with Pellegrini having made some adjustments – De Bruyne was very much to the fore, and he duly delivered the winner with a cool slotted finish from Yaya Toure’s pass.

De Bruyne has been hugely impressive since his big-money arrival at City in August, and Pellegrini said of the Belgian: “We bought him because we thought he is a very creative player, he has goals and because this team tries always to play attractive, offensive football.

“So I think in all senses, he was the perfect player to arrive in our team.”

Looking ahead to Sunday, Pellegrini added: “It is always good to arrive into the derby winning the game you played before.”

Sevilla were caught by a City break as they conceded the goal that ensured they would take nothing from the contest, but coach Unai Emery insisted he was pleased his side had continued to press forward late on.

"You can't have inertia towards the end of the game," said Emery, whose team are third with three points.

"You can't just stop in the 90th minute, and the positive part is that we tried until the end.

"They won the ball when we were attacking, and that set off a counter-attack for City.

"You learn from your mistakes. We'd do the same again to win the game. I'd say it's a positive experience tonight - part of our apprenticeship as a side."

Louis van Gaal criticises Anthony Martial over "stupid" penalty error

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal accused Anthony Martial of gifting CSKA Moscow a Champions League point because of his "stupid" error in the Russian capital.

Martial scored a fine diving header to grab a 1-1 draw for United at the Khimki Arena, but the Frenchman was to blame for gifting the Russians the lead.

Martial raised his right arm going into a challenge with Mario Fernandes in the 15th minute and the ball struck it, leaving the referee with no option but to point to the spot.

David de Gea saved Roman Eremenko's penalty but Seydou Doumbia scored the rebound to put CSKA ahead.

Martial's second-half header saved United's blushes but their manager was disappointed with his star striker for the error that led to the hosts' goal.

Van Gaal said: "They had the present of an Anthony Martial penalty.

"Martial is a human being, he reacts and it is a stupid reaction, but sometimes these things happen.

"He said it is the first time it happens to him, if it always happens with me it's a pity."

Although Van Gaal was unhappy with the French teenager for effectively handing the hosts the lead, he was pleased to escape from his trip east with a point.

United froze in the first half on a sub-zero night in Russia, but improved after the break following the introduction of Marouane Fellaini and could have snatched all three points in the second half.

The draw leaves the Red Devils in second place in Group B at the halfway point of the group stages, with home matches against PSV and CSKA, as well as a trip to Wolfsburg, to come.

"I was very happy with the performance," Van Gaal said.

"I knew in advance that it would be a very difficult game because CSKA are very well organised and compact.

"The tempo was too slow in my opinion, I said that at half-time, and improve our tempo and switching the game from side to side.

"We did that better in the second half than the first half. We created more chances and could have won, but I think it is a deserved draw.

"I will be happy with a draw better than a win, we now have two home matches and you can say we are very strong at home and I hope we can win these games so we are nearly qualified or qualified, but we also have a game away to Wolfsburg.

"We are on schedule (to qualify) after the PSV Eindhoven defeat, which was a very strange defeat for us."

Morgan Schneiderlin believed United slipped up in Russia.

"We had good possession of the ball but we could not create enough chances," he told BT Sport Europe.

"Second half was maybe a bit better, maybe Moscow were a little tired, we kept the ball and made them run a lot and then we had some chances in the second half.

"We could have played a bit more direct maybe but we know we can improve."

And the Frenchman insists the most important thing was to return to Manchester with something in the bag.

"It's never easy to come to Russia, we wanted to win but we will take a point," he added.

"We wanted to come here to win, but the most important thing was not to leave here with zero points, sometimes the most important thing is to get what you can and that's one point.

"It's a bit of mixed feeling, but in the Champions League it is a marathon, it's not just about one game."

Theo Walcott: Bayern win shows we mean business

Forward Theo Walcott claims Arsenal's Champions League victory over Bayern Munich will have sent a clear message to their rivals that the Gunners mean business this season.

The runaway Bundesliga league leaders were defeated 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night to give Arsene Wenger's men their first European win and keep alive hopes of qualification for the knockout stages.

It was a third straight victory for Arsenal, who impressed in beating both Manchester United and Watford, with the north London club now second in the Barclays Premier League table, just two points behind Manchester City.

Walcott feels inflicting a first defeat of the campaign on Pep Guardiola's side will serve as a warning of Arsenal's intentions.

"You play against the best in the Champions League, Bayern are a top, top class team, but we showed our class," said the England international.

"The confidence is just flowing through the team at the moment, you can see that. Results show that and if we continue this you never now where it is going to take us, but we are looking really strong.

"We have been fantastic in the (Premier) League, the two games before in the Champions League weren't great, but the confidence is flowing through the team and you can just sense that, and I think a lot of teams are starting to be a bit wary of that.

"That is what we want, we want to put out a message and (the result on) Tuesday night can hopefully show that.

"But this result can't just be a one-off. We need to keep on doing it.

"However we have still got a lot to do (to qualify) and won't get ahead of ourselves because our focus now is on the Premier League."

Walcott added: "That (next Champions League tie in Munich) is a long way ahead, there are a lot of games coming up before that game, but again we believe we can beat anyone. If we beat Bayern, we can beat anyone."

Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer pulled off a remarkable first-half save from Walcott's point-blank header, but was eventually beaten when he failed to collect a deep free-kick as substitute Olivier Giroud headed into an empty net before Mesut Ozil added a second in stoppage time after the German had clawed the ball back from behind the goalline.

Veteran Arsenal stopper Petr Cech also make some crucial saves, one early on from Thiago and then deflecting Robert Lewandowski's shot over just before Giroud broke the deadlock.

Walcott is in no doubt of what the 33-year-old, signed from Chelsea in the summer, brings to the group, having made his first Champions League appearance for the Gunners.

"There have been a lot of top-quality goalkeepers, but the calibre he has brought to this club, and what he does off the pitch as well , which you guys don't see, just everything is just perfect," said Walcott.

"It is just his whole manner and how he approaches the game and how he helps others. He is a team man, he wants people to do well and he has a lot of belief in this team.

"He makes massive saves in crucial times of the games and that is what lifts spirits and he shows why he has been at the top of his level for many, many years."

Real Madrid remain top of Champions League Group A after PSG stalemate

Real Madrid remain on top in Champions League Group A after a 0-0 draw with closest challengers Paris St Germain.

Cristiano Ronaldo had the best chances to break the deadlock but Real Madrid's hosts held firm to lie second in the group on goal difference.

Malmo are third in the group after a 1-0 home win over Shakhtar Donetsk courtesy of a goal from Markus Rosenberg. Nikola Djurdjic spurned the chance to double the lead when he missed a second-half penalty.

Anthony Martial's good run of scoring form continued as he got the equaliser in Manchester United's 1-1 draw away to CSKA Moscow.

CSKA missed a penalty through Roman Eremenko before Seydou Doumbia opened their account. The Russian side lie second in the group on the same points as third-placed United.

Wolfsburg top the group after second-half strikes from Bas Dost and Max Kruse saw them beat PSV Eindhoven 2-0, the visitors missing a penalty through Jurgen Locadia.

Atletico Madrid's 4-0 home win over Astana moved them top of Group C ahead of Benfica who lost 2-1 away to Galatasaray.

Saul Niguez, Jackson Martinez, Oliver Torres and a Denis Dedechko own goal earned the three points for Atletico.

Nicolas Gaitan had given Benfica the lead but a Selcuk Inan penalty and a Lukas Podolski strike wrapped up the win for the Turkish side before half-time.

Juventus remain top in group D after a 0-0 home draw against Borussia Moenchengladbach.

A late winner from Kevin De Bruyne earned Manchester City a vital 2-1 home victory against Sevilla.

The Spanish club went ahead through Yevhen Konoplyanka and Adil Rami put into his own net to level matters at the break, but the Belgian struck in injury time to leave City second in the group.

Dinamo Zagreb's Arijan Ademi may face UEFA sanction over positive drugs test

Dinamo Zagreb midfielder Arijan Ademi has returned a positive drugs test for his 'B' sample, the Croatia club have confirmed.

Ademi initially failed a routine drugs test after Dinamo's unexpected 2-1 Champions League Group F victory over Arsenal on September 16 in Zagreb, where he had played the whole 90 minutes.

As the 'B' sample is also now proving positive, Macedonia international Ademi - who also played in the 5-0 defeat away to Bayern Munich on September 29 - could face a suspension from UEFA.

A statement from Dinamo Zagreb read: "The 'B' test urine sample taken from Arijan Ademi after the Champions League first-round match against Arsenal has also tested positive.

"The UEFA Disciplinary Commission will decide on the case at its meeting on October 27, after which we will know more information.

"According to the rules of UEFA, Dinamo players should not make any comment until the disciplinary process is complete.

"When we have more information, we will inform fans and the public through the official club website."

The result of the match against Arsenal is not expected to be impacted by the result, while there are no sanctions against clubs from the governing body unless two or more players fail doping tests.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, though, has been left less than impressed by the whole saga.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday night's Champions League match against Bayern Munich, he said: ''When I saw that the players of Zagreb were doped... when you don't play at your best and your opponent is doped, it is difficult."

Wenger continued: ''Well the rules are the rules and I cannot change that. I don't think the result is really under any threat.

''We have to wait now to wait and see what comes out of the second (doping) control (test).''

Pep Guardiola promises Arsenal fans a 'good price' for tickets in Munich return

Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola has promised Arsenal fans they will pay a "good price" for tickets in November's Champions League return in Bavaria.

Bayern fans protested at ticket prices for the opening five minutes of last night's Champions League match in north London.

Banners in the away section declaring "£64 a ticket but without fans football is not worth a penny" were applauded by home supporters when the Bayern fans eventually took their seats.

After the match, Guardiola acknowledged that Gunners fans would not be overcharged when they head to Germany for the return match on November 4.

He told the post-match press conference: "I will speak with (Arsene) Wenger for next time to make it cheaper for our fans.

"We will take care of Arsenal fans in Munich with a good price. They can travel."

On the pitch, Arsenal won the contest 2-0, with goals from Olivier Giroud and Mesut Ozil keeping their hopes of qualification alive.

Anyone with a BT Sport Pack subscription can follow the link at the top of this page to stream Man City v Sevilla exclusively live online on BTSport.com from 7pm on Wednesday, October 21st.

Is Man City v Sevilla on ITV or Sky Sports?

No. As BT Sport is the exclusive home of the Champions League and Europa League for the next three seasons, these matches will no longer be shown on ITV or Sky Sports.

However, a selection of matches will also be made free-to-air throughout the season on the new BT Sport Showcase channel, with the four British participants – Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United – all set to feature at least once.
